A Brief History of Wilton Road URC
The Wilton Road church community was formed from the merger of two former Congregational Churches, Westminster Road and Union Row, both located in Handsworth. Originally the Union Row church was sold and the members from that Church joined in worship and fellowship at Westminster Road. However, the Westminster Road buildings became uneconomic to maintain and it was decided to build a new church in Wilton Road. The land upon which the new church was built was originally occupied by a large Georgian House with comensurate gardens, owned by the Lempriere family. The two daughters of this family were members of Westminster Road URC. The house was knocked down and the ground cleared in order to erect what is now Wilton Road URC. The first service was held in the new church in 1974. For a fuller history go to the history page on this site. If you are interested in learning more about Lieutenant Lempriere, father of Jessie (see the photo of the foundation stone on the 'Our Church' page) and a famous balloonist in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a good place to start would be here: - Click
